Public service union UNISON, school leaders' union NAHT, the National Education Trust (NET) and Maximising Teaching Assistants published a set of Professional Standards for Teaching Assistants in June 2016. The standards were originally drafted by a working group of experts, commissioned by the DfE, who ultimately chose not to publish them. Unlike the Teachers' Standards, they are non-statutory and non-mandatory, although schools may wish to use them to help to define the role and purpose of teaching assistants and to ensure that they maximise the educational value and contribution of employees working directly with pupils. Further information, including a copy of the standards, is freely available on the UNISON.
