The minimum periods of notice to be given by an employer are governed by the Employment Rights Act 1996:

Grade Notice Period
1 month or more but less than 2 years Not less than 1 Week'
2 years or more but less than 12 years Not less than 1 week for each year of continuous service'
12 years or more Not less than 12 weeks'


Employees should be paid up to the last day of their notice period. Schools should notify HR promptly of all resignations using the appropriate e-form to ensure that an overpayment doesn't occur. During the probationary period, the notice period is 1 week.
